ABOUT THE FILM
See the film with live musical accompaniment! Metropolis depicts a futuristic city split between a privileged elite in towering skyscrapers and workers laboring underground. The story follows Freder, the ruler’s son, and Maria, a workers’ advocate, as they seek to bridge the class divide. Notable for groundbreaking special effects, massive sets, and German Expressionist style, it has deeply influenced sci-fi classics like Blade Runner. Initially a box-office failure with mixed reviews, it has since been restored, acclaimed, and hailed as one of cinema’s most important works.
